MGOC Servicing Classic MG’s, at the MGOC Workshop.

On the 7th of October the MGOC offered club members the chance to again attend the Club Workshops for an informative practical session on MG maintenance.

These sessions were quickly fully booked, in fact the response was so great that a Sunday session was also added due to the demand from MG owners.

The sessions were held in the MGOC Garage, on site at HQ and lasted about 7 hours including lunch and breaks.

Along with some very useful hard copy information about MOT prep work, the the class was skillfully run by speaker Mr Michael Beswick, who remained totally engaging and informative throughout the entire day.

Subjects covered in the session included:

  • PPS – Keeping physically safe when playing with the Car.
  • Safe Jacking
  • Oil and Filter Change.
  • Check / Change (standard ) Air Filters
  • Check / Change Fuel Filter
  • Checking Points and lubricating the Distributor
  • Changing and gapping the plugs
  • Valve Clearances
  • Checking Battery Electrolyte Levels
  • Dynamic Timing
  • Carburettor Dashpots
  • Location of Drain Fill Plugs on Gearbox and Diff
  • Front Suspension; Prop; Handbrake Cable Grease
  • Front Pads Removal and Inspection
  • Rear Shoes Cleaning and Adjustment
  • Temperature Gauge
  • Simple Electrical Testing
  • MOT Prep.

The sessions were carried out in the Club Workshops, an impressive workspace with plenty of room to allow all delegates to have a clear and unobstructed view of the proceedings.

Documentation provided included detailed diagrams and pictures, which assisted greatly in supporting the practical hands on elements of the day.

I found the session ideal for those who may have limited exposure to MG’s, specifically those who may have a very basic exposure to working on Classic cars and I would have no issue recommending this to anyone who’s new to owning a Classic MG.

For those older hands who have been into car servicing for a little longer, the session is a great refresher, but it is not designed to get into the deep detail, on that basis it may not provide any additional enlightenment for the more seasoned spanner twirlers amongst us.

Overall I’d say it was money and time well invested, a great day out and a good excuse (if any is ever needed) to get the car out and go on a run.

Finally a Big Thank You to the MGOC team, who made us all so very welcome, with Tea, Coffee and a great buffet lunch, nice to meet the you all, along with the other owners on the day.
